Saudi Arabia's top religious cleric has ruled that chess is forbidden for Muslims because it is a 'waste of time' and promotes gambling. A 56-year-old man, one Felix Onyebuchi, who is in police net in Enugu for allegedly using fraudulent means to withdraw the sum of N11m from the account of a bank customer, has blamed “lack” for his venture into crime. Onyebuchi, a native of Osa-Ukwu, in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, but based in Lagos, was paraded alongside other criminals by the Enugu State Police Command. Enugu State commissioner of police, Mr. NwodiboEkechukwu, disclosed that Onyebuchi was a member of a sophisticated syndicate that specialised in stealing and manipulating bank data. According to the police chief, the syndicate usually applied to mobile telecommunication service  providers to ‘welcome-back’ registered phone numbers that belong to their potential victims. Activity in a church was disrupted on Saturday when a middle aged man, suspected to be insane, walked into the church and shouted, “I want God to forgive me.” It was gathered that the church situated along Ezeani Quarters in Asaba, conducts prayer session every Saturday morning. A Pastor with the The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Lokoja, Kogi State, Pastor Ayo Funsho, was kidnapped by some unidentified gunmen while he was preaching in his Parish, the Resurrection Parish, on Sunday January 10th. According to Tribune, the armed men stormed the church and started shooting sporadically, causing pandemonium in the church. The armed men then went straight to the pulpit where they took the pastor, placed him in their vehicle and left. The abductors then contacted his family demanding a ransom of N50 million.  However, the Kogi State command of the Nigeria Police said it was not aware of the incident as the matter has not being reported to them.

A nine-year-old housemaid, Precious Chinwedu, says she is still having pains two weeks after her boss, Mrs. Ifeoma Mbakwe, poured hot water on her for allegedly stealing crayfish. The incident happened around 8pm on December 27 on Idowu Oya Street, Agbado, Lagos State. The primary 3 pupil, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on Friday at Rem-Yems, a private hospital in Agbado, where she was admitted, said the woman had sent her to bring the crayfish in the kitchen. Chinwedu said she had explained to her boss that she could not find the crayfish, but the woman accused her of eating it without her permission. She said Mbakwe angrily took a small pestle and hit  her in the head. Not done, Mbakwe, the mother of a seven-month-old baby, reportedly bit the girl in the back before pouring the hot water on her. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a native doctor, Ifatade Elegbeleye, for allegedly duping and impregnating a female client, Cecilia (pseudonym), in the Ipaja area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that 42-year-old Elegbeleye, who hails from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, was arrested by the X-Squad section of the command after the victim complained to the police. The suspect was said to have been arrested on December 21, 2015. Elegbeleye, who told PUNCH Metro that he had sex with the lady, added that he and the woman fell in love with each other, while the sex was by mutual consent. Elegbeleye added that the victim had given birth to a baby girl for him. According to the police, the native doctor allegedly had a culture of turning his female clients into house maids after having sex with some of them. The police added that Cecilia’s mother, who is a trader in Abesan Estate, Ipaja, had also been allegedly defrauded by the native doctor to the tune of N7.9m in 2015

The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Godwin Emefiele, during a tour of the refinery which is projected to refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. assured Dangote Group that it will support its access to Foreign Exchange in order to build its proposed $14 billion refinery in the country. The CBN governor said that the support was to help with the importation of equipment needed to bring the Dangote refinery to reality. He said: “Your ongoing 14 billion dollar refinery investment will enjoy our support, no doubt. The Director General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission NBC has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an alleged N15 billion fraud. According to Premium Times, sources at the antigraft agency say Mba is alleged to have conspired with some top directors to defraud the agency. EFCC stormed NBC last week and took away staff in the Finance and Account unit. During interrogation, they implicated their boss, Mba. He was arrested this morning and is currently being questioned by the EFCC operatives.

An Ethiopian woman, Jinat Farid was found guilty of killing Ghalia Eida al-Harithi by striking her repeatedly with an axe as the victim knelt to perform Muslim prayers, the ministry said in a statement carried by state news agency, SPA. After killing Harithi, Farid stole two gold rings and an unspecified amount of money, the ministry said. She was executed in the western city of Taif. A commercial driver identified as Kehinde Akangbi has been accused of setting his 22 year old son, Sola ablaze for allegedly stealing from a roadside beggar in Omu-Aran in Kwara state. According to a report by Vanguard, Sola who is a Wheelbarrow pusher and alleged troublemaker, was accused of stealing money from roadside beggars. He was apprehended and then taken to his father who allegedly took him to the bush at Omu-Aran-Isanlu-Isin road where he tied his hands and leg and then set him on fire. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an ISIS fighter publicly executed his mother in Raqqa, Syria, because she encouraged him to leave the group. The woman said to be in her 40s, obviously worried for her son's safety warned him to leave because she feared that the US-backed coalition was going to wipe out the terror group. Not only did her son not heed her advice, he reported her to the group. Citing local sources, the Observatory said the 20-year-old man executed his mother on Wednesday near the post office building where she worked in front of hundreds of people in Raqqa, a main base of operations for the group in Syria.

A mysterious incident happened in Ondo state at the weekend when a police inspector named Usman Kadiri stationed at the Yaba Police division in Ondo state suddenly died in his sleep. One of his colleagues who spoke on his sudden death, said; “Kadiri was in charge of traffic control. A five-year-old boy, who was allegedly raped by a 25-year-old man, Ganiu Amusa, in the Alakuko area of Lagos State, says the suspect dragged him into a bush before raping him. The matter was said to have been reported to the police when Thompson began to complain about pains in his anus to his mother, identified only as Adenike, who thereafter raised the alarm. The boy, Thompson (pseudonym), told PUNCH Metro on Thursday that Amusa also warned him not to disclose the incident to his mother when he got home. An American church, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta church will in September open a private school in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. The school is aimed at attracting lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender youths and teachers. According to a report by the Associated Press, the institution is being established in Atlanta for students who feel bullied or not accepted in traditional schools. The school, Pride School Atlanta is also open to any student who believes they’re not getting the support they need for “being different,” says Pride School founder Christian Zsilavetz. Pride School will initially operate out of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta Church and is expected to open by September 2016. Tuition will be around $13,000, though Zsilavetz says financial assistance is available for students who need it. Former chairman of the board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Anenih underwent an open-heart surgery in a UK hospital last month. A member of the family, confirmed this development to The Cable and said it was “only God” that saved the life of the politician who clocked 82 last month. The heart condition was accidentally discovered when the former minister of works and housing was preparing to return to Nigeria after a visit to the UK. He was said to have complained of irregular heartbeat, prompting a family member to make an emergency call for an ambulance. The operation however turned out successful and he has returned to the country.
