Eight Nigerian men arrested in Thailand for online romance scam

Eight men were  arrested in Thailand alongside six others for engaging in online romance scam, are currently being paraded by the Police in the Asian country. The men reportedly engaged in swindling nearly Bt2 million from Thai women in Ratchaburi, Samut Sakhon, Phitsanulok, Chon Buri and Bangkok’s Dusit district. Deputy Tourist Police chief Maj-General Surachate Hakpan told a press conference on Monday, August 6, that the investigation began after complaints from victims – each of whom wired between Bt300,000 and Bt500,000 to the gang. He said that the Thai suspects – including at least four Thai women – aided the gang by opening bank accounts and withdrawing cash for the foreign suspects. He disclosed this in a letter dated August 4, addressed to the Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Bwacha. He, however, did not state any reason for the resignation. Akpabio, however, thanked the senate leadership and referred to the PDP as “our great party”, “for giving him the opportunity to lead the caucus for three years.” See his resignation letter below… Rumors have it that Senator Akpabio has his eye on the seat of the senate president. One person died, a number sustained injuries and about 200 buildings including a primary school and medical center were severely damaged as windstorm lashed ten villages in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi state last weekend.  Head, Nema Sokoto Operations Office, Mal. Suleiman Muhammad and Head of Search and Rescue Unit of the operations office, Mal. Ambursa Aminu Shayau were led by delegated authorities from the state government and affected communities to the areas of the incident for the assessment. Meanwhile, reports gathered will be prepared and forwarded for Federal Government's necessary intervention to alleviate the plight of the affected victims.

58 Illegal Universities operating in Nigeria As Released By NUC

A list of 58 illegal universities in Nigeria has been released by the National Universities Commission (NUC) who disclosed in a new publication that the universities are yet to be licensed by the federal government and have been shut down for violating the national minimum standard for education. A Monday bulletin from the office of the Executive Secretary on NUC, dated May 14, listed all the illegal universities across the country. The names of the universities are: 1. University of Accountancy and Management Studies, operating anywhere in Nigeria 2. Christians of Charity American University of Science and Technology, Nkpor, Anambra State or any of its other campuses 3. University of Industry, Yaba, Lagos or any of its other campuses 4. Three patients infected with the Ebola virus slipped out of an isolation ward at a hospital in the Congolese city of Mbandaka, health officials said, as medics raced to stop the deadly disease from spreading in the busy river port. The cases represent a setback to costly efforts to contain the virus, including the use of an experimental vaccine, and show efforts to stem its spread can be hampered by age-old customs or scepticism about the threat it poses. Two patients left the hospital on Monday night with the help of family members, then headed to a church, the World Health Organization’s spokesman in Congo, Eugene Kabambi, told Reuters. One died at home the next day and was buried with the help of medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). The other was sent back to hospital and died that night, Kabambi said. A woman believed to be a British tourist has been seen ordering a burger with her bare bum on show. She is reported to have gone into the fast food restaurant after a night of partying. The woman is wearing a sheer top and tiny black skirt that is hitched up around her waist. German newspaper Bild said she was filmed in the Majorcan town of Inca at 11am on Sunday. Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora also carried the picture, linking it to the drunken tourism the island is fighting against. The newspaper also mentioned the party resort Magaluf , which is 29 miles away from Inca. Inca is in the centre of the island and is not a mass tourism hotspotBild claimed the woman was with with two friends and needed the burger as a hangover cure and headlined its article “This is how you ask for a hamburger in Majorca”. Nurse and 10 others Confirmed Dead From Nipah Virus Outbreak In India

The death toll from an outbreak of Nipah virus has risen to 10 in India's southern state of Kerala. Nine patients that tested positive for the virus have been quarantined and are being treated, Rajeev Sadanandan, additional chief secretary for the state's Department of Health and Family Welfare, told CNN on Tuesday. The outbreak began in the northern district of Kozhikode and has spread to neighboring Malappuram district, Sadanandan said. Symptoms of Nipah virus can begin with headache and drowsiness but quickly transform into a coma within a matter of days, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Other symptoms include acute respiratory syndrome -- where the lungs cannot get enough oxygen to the body and fatal encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain. There is no vaccine, and treatment is limited to supportive care.

Honest Airport Cleaner Returns $6,000 Found In Toilet

Coming at a time Nigeria’s international image is not too good with the incessant cases of corruption in the country, a cleaner at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos State, Charity Bassey, recently did the unexpected when she found a nylon containing $6,000 valued at over N2 million, and turned it in to security officials at the terminal. The cleaner, an employee of Lakewood Development CompanyT, which is into janitorial services, was on duty at the departure wing of the airport when she picked up the item from the floor. According to her, she was standing in front of the toilet when a passenger drew her attention to something inside the toilet. “I went in and saw the small black nylon on the floor. It looked dirty and rough, you won’t know it is money that was inside it. I picked it, felt some notes inside and took it to the customer care. A 24-year-old woman has been sentenced to 15 years in jail after she admitted to having sex with a minor in kenya. Ms Judith Wandera was on Wednesday found guilty of defilement and intentionally performing indecent act on a minor contrary to the Sexual Offences Act, on July 5, 2017 at Kicomi area.  A prosecutor Nyakundi Mukaya told the Kisumu court that medical evidence from specimen collected from the duo confirmed that the woman and the schoolboy were having an intimate affair. He noted that the boy had been living with the accused for more than four months. The court heard that as a result of the affair, the minor dropped out of school and moved in with the accused before the boy was rescued by police officers. The Kisumu court, after considering all the evidence presented by the complainant, ruled that it agrees the woman and the minor knew each other and had sexual intercourse on numerous occasions.  Principal Magistrate Ms Joan Wambilyanga, in his judgment, said

Minister of Information and Culture,  Lai Mohammed  has expressed confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari will emerge victorious in the 2019 general elections.   He spoke today while inspecting the dualisation of the Ibadan-Ilorin road in Osun state saying,  'we are so confident that our re-election would be easy. Whether it is in terms of infrastructure, whether it is in terms of social intervention, every day we are working for the people.”   According to Mohammed, the Buhari administration has kept its promises to the people of Nigeria. NECO Registrar, Two Deputy Directors Sacked

The Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Professor Charles Uwakwe has been sacked by the federal government. Along with the Registrar, two Deputy Directors were also fired. No official reason have been given for the disengagement of the Register and The Nation gathered that the disengagement have not been made known to most of the staff of the Council. Sources in the Council said that the sack may have come about because of the award of a N25 billion contract which was without the knowledge of either the Federal ministry of education or the governing board of the council. Another source disclosed that the Registrar had recruited some staff without the knowledge of the appropriate authorities. Other sources argued that the Registrar was only given indefinite suspension on reasons which would soon be resolved.
