A 16-year-old girl in India was found hanging on Christmas day after apparently taking her life. She had been kidnapped and gang-raped as punishment for her mother winning a local election. She went to the police with her mother to report the matter but she wasn't taken seriously. Feeling humiliated and traumatised, she took her own life. It was only after her death that police swung into action and arrested two suspects. The Socialist Party candidate in Mirzapur, Arvind Sen, said that the girl was gang-raped to avenge the poll defeat, allegedly by relatives of a losing candidate. Her mother was elected for the local government faction, the block development council, in the Mirzapur district of north-east India. However, a senior police officer told said that a post-mortem report did not find signs of rape. The federal government yesterday reduced the pump price of petrol from N87 to N86.50k per litre with effect from January 1st. In a statement signed by the‎ executive secretary of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) Farouk Ahmed in Abuja, FG said that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) retail stations will sell at N86 per litre, while retail outlets owned by oil marketers will sell at N86.50k per litre. ‎ The new price follows the approval of the minister of state for petroleum resources Dr. Ibe Kachikwu. The statement adds that the new price will remain till March 31, 2016. “This is not static; there will be a quarterly review of the pricing template. However, if there is any pricing shift, the minister of state for petroleum resources may call for a review upwards or downward depending on the market condition but for at least the first quarter of 2016 the price will be N86.50/litre while for NNPC it is N86/litre,” he said.

24 year old Funke Balogun, a National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), was allegedly electrocuted in a hotel bathroom owned by her boyfriend Abolade Adetunji's mother at 30, Balogun Street, Oshodi in Lagos on Sunday December 27th. According to a report by the Nation, Funke who is a mother of one, was in a relationship with Abolade who just passed from NYSC. According to Funmi, the younger sister of the deceased, Abolade came to pick her sister at their residence on Saturday around 11pm. “Abolade was in a hurry that night and I told my sister not to go but she picked some of her things and left with him. On Sunday morning around 7, she called and said plans had changed that they were not going to the beach again but to a hotel and since then, we have been trying her mobile line. 62-year-old Babatunde Idris has been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command for parading himself as a colonel in the Nigerian Army and using a fake identity to defraud one Yinusa Mustapha of the sum of N40m. The state Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, said Idris was arrested after a petition was filed against him. He said: “Following a petition received alleging the fraudulent activities of Idris, the command’s Anti-kidnapping Squad swung into action and arrested the suspect, who until his arrest had fraudulently obtained various sums of money from his victims.” Oyebade added that the suspect promised his last victim, Mustapha, that he would help him to get a certificate for oil importation in 2012, but up till now that hasn't been done. He failed to complete the deal after the money was paid into his account. Some members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria have been arraigned at the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Zaria Road, Kaduna and charged with criminal conspiracy and inciting public disturbances. Their leader, Ibrahim El-zakyzaky, has been taken into custody by the army before he was released to the police for investigation. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, on Tuesday t saidhat the Shi’ite members were being prosecuted for incitement and public disturbances among other charges. She said: “Some Shi’ite members have been arraigned in court where they were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbances among others; they have been remanded in prison custody and the case adjourned.” The Shi’ite members had had a clash with the Army about two weeks ago during which about 20 persons were killed. A young man identified as Anselm Ugwoke killed his father on Christmas Day in Enugu during a heated argument. The deceased is identified as Paulinus Ugwuoke, 60, from Imilike Agu in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu state. The spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command who confirmed the incident said the police were on the culprit's trail. It was gathered that on December 25, at about 10pm, Anselm Ugwuoke had engaged the father with his friends in a serious exchange of words over a yet to be established issue and later resulted in the alleged hitting of the father with an object which left him unconscious and later was confirmed dead thereby throwing the community into mourning mood. The Federal Government may reduce the pump price of petrol to N85 per litre from January 1, 2016. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, made this disclosure to journalists at the Port Harcourt Refining Company, Rivers State, after inspecting the plant. Asked when the Federal Government would release the new petrol price template prepared by the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulation Agency, Kachikwu said that he approved the new price for the agency on Thursday. Pressed to reveal when the new price would become effective, Kachikwu, said:  “like I said, we have done a modulation and it is showing us below N87. I imagine that if PPPRA publishes it today, it will become effective immediately. But the 1st of January 2016 is when we are looking at.” He said the new price would be below the current N87 per litre and it would now convince Nigerians that the pricing modulation that the Federal Government promised to embark on a few days ago was not a trick.

A Calabar-based business magnate (name withheld) and his son have been shot in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, after an armed robbery operation in the victim’s resident that lasted for more than three hours. The victims, who reside along the MCC Road in Calabar, were said to be recuperating from the gun wounds they sustained during the attack. A close family source, Adah Igwe, disclosed that the man owned a filing station around the vicinity. She told Southern City News on Friday that the robbers gained access to the building after they had succeeded in disarming the security guard. Igwe said: “The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday, between 1am and 4am. Abdullah ah-Zaher became the youngest person given the death sentence, according to campaigners Reprieve. Campaigners claim Abdullah ah-Zaher, who attended the protest when he was 15 years was put on death row as part of a crackdown on political dissent. The now 19-year-old has been moved to solitary confinement and could be beheaded at any moment. Despite possible repercussions, his family have gone public with his story, in a final bid to save his life. His father Hassan al-Zaher said: “Please help me save my son from the imminent threat of death. US Air Force officials say the Department of Homeland Security has taken the lead role in the search for two Afghan men who disappeared while training with the U.S. military at a base in south Georgia. The men - who were part of a group of 23 from Afghanistan who have been at the base since February - have now been identified as Mirwais Kohistani and Shirzad Rohullah. Their names and passports were released Thursday as part of a federal investigation to track down the pair, after they failed to show up for training on Monday. Air Force Lt. Col. Chris Karns said Friday that Homeland Security, in coordination with the U.S. State Department, is leading efforts to locate the men. However officials maintain there is no evidence that either of them pose a threat.
