I’ve had to relocate this guy from one place to another so nobody knows his whereabouts.” The  Nigerian government in December 2016 adopted a policy on whistleblowing to encourage citizens to report financial and other related c

Ikoyi Money: Whistleblower now a millionaire-EFCC

Image
The “young man” who blew the whistle on the money recovered from an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos, is now a millionaire as he has been officially compensated. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said the man was rewarded with percentage of the recovered. The Acting Chairman of the commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, stated this in Vienna, Austria, on Thursday, spokesman of the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement. Uwujaren said Magu spoke at the ongoing 7th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption. On April 7, EFCC operatives broke into a four-bedroom apartment on Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, and pulled out $43 million, £27,800 and N23 million stashed in a wardrobe. The commission said the discovery followed an operation triggered by a whistle blower’s alert received by its Lagos office. Uwujaren quoted Magu as saying that the whistle blower was already a millionaire by virtue of the percentage he was officially entitled

Photo: American journalist arrested for allegedly insulting Mugabe gets bail

A high court judge in Zimbabwe  has granted bail to an American citizen, Martha O’Donovan, accused of subverting the government of President Robert Mugabe via Twitter. The judge in a ruling Thursday said the case lacked facts. Martha O‘Donovan has been in prison since Saturday, a day after she was arrested on accusations of insulting Mugabe in a Twitter post. Police later levelled the more serious charge of subversion, which carries a possible 20-year jail term. She denies both charges. O‘Donovan works for Magamba TV, which describes itself as Zimbabwe’s leading producer of political satire. In granting her bail, High Court Judge Clement Phiri said there was a “patent absence of facts” in the state’s case. “The applicant has demonstrated that she should be granted bail. It is my finding that it is in the interests of justice that the applicant be given bail,” Phiri said. O‘Donovan was not in court. Phiri ordered her to deposit $1,000 with the court, surrender her pa

Yemen Is Hit by World's Biggest Famine

Image
Yemen faces the world's largest famine in decades "with millions of victims" if aid deliveries are not resumed, a senior UN official has warned. Mark Lowcock, the UN under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs, urged the Saudi-led coalition to lift its blockade of the conflict-torn country. On Monday, the coalition shut air, land and sea routes into Yemen after Houthi rebels fired a missile at Riyadh. The ballistic warhead was intercepted near the Saudi capital. Saudi Arabia said the blockade was needed to stop Iran sending weapons to the rebels. Iran denies arming the rebels, who have fought the Saudi-led coalition since 2015. Mr Lowcock was speaking on Wednesday, after briefing the UN Security Council on the issue behind closed doors. "I have told the council that unless those measures are lifted... there will be a famine in Yemen", Mr Lowcock told reporters. "It will be the largest famine the world has seen for many decades with millions

US Citizen Arrested In Zimbabwe, Accused Of Insulting Mugabe

Image
Zimbabwe police have charged a United States citizen with subversion for allegedly insulting President Robert Mugabe on Twitter as a "sick man," lawyers said Friday. The offense carries up to 20 years in prison. It was the first arrest made since Mugabe last month appointed a minister for cybersecurity, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said, a move criticized by activists as aimed at clamping down on social media users. Zimbabwe was shaken last year by the biggest anti-government protests in a decade. Police picked up 25-year-old Martha O'Donovan on Friday morning in the capital, Harare, U.S. Embassy spokesman David McGuire told The Associated Press. Police accuse O'Donovan of tweeting "We are being led by a selfish and sick man," from the Twitter handle @matigary, said her lawyer, Obey Shava with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights. The tweet had a photo illustration of the 93-year-old Mugabe with a catheter, the charge sheet said. O'Do

The APC points accusing finger again: PDP is the reason Buhari travels abroad for treatment – Presidency, APC

Image
The presidency has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari never made a promise to Nigerians in 2015 that he would not seek medical treatment abroad if elected. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, yesterday disclosed this while appearing as a guest on Focus Nigeria, a programme on Africa Independent Television (AIT). The spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bolaji Abdullahi, who appeared alongside Adesina, also said the much talked about promise the president allegedly made was false. Abdullahi said: “I was the Deputy Director of the policy directorate of the campaign, I was there from the beginning to the end.” “So many people came to join the group, some from even outside the country. Then one day, we were in a meeting, then one gentleman who heads one of the international NGOs in the country brought this list of 100 items that he was proposing that we should push out as the promise of Mr President to Nigerians. “We circul

Buhari rejects motion of endorsement for second term at APC NEC meeting – Presidency

Image
Femi Adesina, media adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed that his principal personally rejected the motion to endorse him for 2019 during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This is contained in an article he release on Friday titled, ‘PMB: Just like the mills of the gods’. Adesina lamented how the media made it look as though Buhari was embarrassed at the meeting. He insisted that it was Buhari himself who signalled to those in attendance that the meeting should not talk about his 2019 ambition. Adesina wrote: “I was there (APC NEC meeting). The atmosphere was friendly, almost convivial. At a point, someone moved a motion of confidence in the Buhari administration. “The seconder, a former state governor, added to the motion, seeking an endorsement of the President as candidate for second term in 2019. As he raised the motion, I saw the President gesturing, with his two palms downwards. “The gesture meant,
